Statement from the Center for Methane Emissions Solutions on EPA's Proposed Rollback of Methane Standards
The Center for Methane Emissions Solutions (CMES) expressed serious concern today over the Environmental Protection Agency's proposed rollback of methane emissions standards for the oil and natural gas sector, warning that the proposal threatens American innovation, investment, and economic competitiveness.
"Sensible methane regulations are good for American innovation and good for the economy. Clear, consistent, and achievable standards provide oil and gas operators with the certainty they need to make long-term investments in emissions reduction technologies. They also create a predictable market for the American companies developing and deploying those solutions.
"EPA's proposal moves us in the opposite direction. By weakening existing requirements, including eliminating the Super Emitter Program and scaling back other emissions controls, the agency risks undermining the market signals that drive technological innovation, private investment, and job creation.
"American companies are leading the world in developing technologies that detect, measure, capture, and reduce methane emissions. These innovations can help oil and gas operators improve efficiency, reduce waste, and strengthen their competitiveness while delivering meaningful environmental benefits. We should be accelerating their adoption, not creating new uncertainty about the future of the market.
"CMES recognizes that methane regulations must be practical, cost-effective, and responsive to the operational realities of the oil and gas industry. But regulatory certainty and technological innovation go hand in hand. Weakening standards that encourage investment in proven solutions is a step backward for American energy leadership.
"We urge EPA to reconsider this proposal and pursue a balanced approach that supports responsible energy production, encourages innovation, and strengthens American economic competitiveness."
